A world created by a single color, black.
That black ink is called "Sumi,"and a work painted by sumi is called "Suiboku-ga" or "Sumi-e."
It is a black-and-white painting. It sounds simple, but that doesn't mean its expression is simple. How much that ink could express might be more than you can think of. The variety of tones would create from a delicate and gentle atmosphere to bold and powerful expression. Once you have sumi on a paper, you can never erase it. Accept all that happens on the paper. Every drop of sumi will open a way to make the work better.
Its white space and its various tones of black would quietly invite you to a world of imagination. I hope you will enjoy the modern sumi-e world created by both fantasy and reality.

A world created by various tones of Sumi-black. Hear the sound, feel the wind, see the colors through that simple black-and-white atmosphere. Have a relaxing time and listen for small talk among the animals living in the monochrome world. |

Born in Tokyo. Graduated from American School in the Netherlands. B.A. in Law at Keio University, Tokyo. After a year working at an IT company, I began to learn Sumi-e as a hobby at first. I had a career change several years later, and now, I work at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo as a part-time instructor, teaching a course on Sumi-e painting which is designed for both international students and regular students.
People often ask me why I started painting Sumi-e. When I started learning it, I just wanted to try something new. However, I believe many of my interests led me to this world. I like sumi, the black ink, since I learned Japanese Calligraphy, the photography class I took in the high school introduced me to the interesting world of black and white, and I also loved the art class which taught me how important it is to make an original work. And the most of all, from my experience of living abroad, I wanted to learn something traditional in my home country. All those elements fell upon Sumi-e.
I never imagined that Sumi-e would be such an important part of my life, but I am truly grateful for all the people I met and all the things I've experienced, because without any of them, I wouldn't be standing here as I am right now.
I hope I can meet my goal someday to create works which you can feel winds, see colors, hear sounds, and which could bring a little peace of mind to people's everyday life.
